Women in Web3: Why Equity Is Critical in Web3

Web3 has become one of the biggest topics of discussion in the world of tech over the past years as it promises to be the next stage in the evolution of the internet. With investment in web3 startups reaching an all-time high of $23.7 billion in 2021, the time is ripe for anyone looking to help shape the future. Unfortunately, gender equity seems to be a big problem even for a young industry built on ideals like participation.

The tech industry as a whole has been plagued by gender imbalance since its beginnings, which have been reflected in different manners but more especially in the presence of women in senior positions. A survey by NTT Data Uk in 2021 found that only 25% of women in tech believe that women have equal opportunities in the industry, compared to 68% of men.

While many efforts have been made to increase equity and female participation in tech, there is still a long way to go. This is despite several studies suggesting that the more diverse and inclusive a business, the more profitable it will be in the long term.

Reports by organizations like Web3Equity show that females have less representation in the NFT and crypto investing sector, which could undermine the future framework in which web3 would be built. This is paradoxical for a technology built around the principle of leveling the playing field in different aspects as well as creating new opportunities for everyone.

With web3 still being in the early stages and development, having ideals centered around participation, and the fact that it is capturing top talent from industries like Big Tech, creating more inclusive teams and women in executive positions is critical.

This was the topic of discussion of Grit Daily House’s “Women in Web3” panel, which saw some of the women helping shape the future of web3 share their insights and experiences in the industry during SXSW.

Presented by TheFutureParty and sponsored by Binance.US, the panel discussion counted with the participation of artist, Producer, and Songwriter ÉRITÉ; Ashleigh Hill, Head of Experience & Collaborations at TheFutureParty; Meral Arik,  Passage Protocol’s Co-Founder; Alex Porter,  Mod Tech Lab’s Founder & CEO; and Leah Li, Head of Marketing Binance.US.

Talking points included the inspiration to join the ecosystem, the role of women in the future of web3, and their expectations for the future. This made the panel an incredible opportunity for web3 beginners and veterans alike to gain first-hand insights and information on web3 and the fight for equity in tech.
