This French Startup, Sonio, is Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Improve Prenatal Screening and Diagnosis

One in thirty-three babies born in Europe and the US have birth defects. The complexity of prenatal medicine is demonstrated by the fact that in 50% of cases, the defects were missed during the ultrasound.

With its innovative AI software, Sonio seeks to solve this issue by giving prenatal medicine practitioners access to a wide range of medical, imaging, genetic, and environmental data in order to improve prenatal screening and diagnosis. Doctors in charge of prenatal diagnosis must consider numerous signs that can be seen on an ultrasound. Sonio Diagnostics helps them daily and guides them through 250 syndromes and 700 hundred anomalies.

Sonio Diagnostics and Sonio Screening are the company’s two products. Sonio Diagnostics is an artificial intelligence software that aids in the diagnosis of prenatal abnormalities and related syndromes. Sonio Screening tracks ultrasounds performed during pregnancy. Prenatal screening and diagnosis practitioners can use these software programs to assist and direct them before, during, and after the examination.

Sonio’s mission is to improve women’s and children’s health by promoting access and quality of care through technological innovation, medical expertise, and collective intelligence. 150 healthcare experts across Europe have already started using the system, which can help even the most seasoned medical specialists. Additionally, the business has established a number of alliances with companies like Samsung France, a producer of ultrasound equipment, as well as with private clinics like PointGyn (OneClinic) in France and GynEcho in Canada.

Founded in 2020, the French startup has recently raised €5 million in funding. The investment was led by Elaia, with OneRagtime and BpiFrance participating. Sonio will be able to advance on three fronts with this funding, including integrating image recognition into the Sonio platform, getting ready for market launch in the US and FDA clearance, and stepping up company sales in Europe.
