Like last year, GCM Grosvenor maintains the second-largest AUM in the directory with $72.13 billion, a 16.45% increase from 2020. Meanwhile, GCM Grosvenor remains the largest employer on Crain’s private-equity list, with 299 full-time local employees. Monroe Capital is the list’s second-largest employer, reporting 152 workers in the Chicago area.
Creation Investments Capital Management LLC saw the largest growth in assets under management from 2020. The firm reported $1.86 billion in AUM last year, a whopping 161.2% surge from 2020.

Shore Capital Partners reported the greatest growth in employment. The firm employed 110 people in 2021—a 129.2% increase from 2020.
Crain’s private-equity directory also features six firms that were not in last year’s edition: BPOC, LaSalle Capital, Pritzker Private Capital, Sheridan Capital Partners, Silver Oak Services Partners and Woodlawn Partners. Of these newcomers, Pritzker Private Capital reported both the largest AUM and number of employees. The firm has nearly $7.06 billion under management and 41 local employees.
In this year’s venture-capital directory, ARCH Venture Partners has the largest current fund size of $2.95 billion, nearly a 52% increase from 2020. S2G Ventures reported the second-largest fund of $1.64 billion, a 57.7% surge from 2020.
Adams Street Partners is the largest employer on Crain’s VC list, with 138 employees in Chicago.
The full Excel versions of the directories include 59 private-equity firms and 36 venture-capital firms. Each directory includes data for 2021 and 2020 assets under management or fund sizes, funding sources, the number of local investments, the number of investments outside of the Chicago area, the amounts invested in 2021 and 2020, plus types of investments and full-time employee headcounts.
