Magic: The Gathering and Marvel team up in epic crossover

The great IP crossover experiment continues with Marvel showing up in yet another place you don’t typically expect Marvel to be. Today, Wizards of the Coast announced that Marvel’s bringing its iconic (and inescapable) heroes to Magic: The Gathering with new “collectible products and tentpole sets” that will hit your Local Game Store in 2025.

Crossovers are not new to Magic: The Gathering. It just launched the card game’s Doctor Who-themed Commander set. Earlier this year, Magic released a Lord of the Rings set (complete with its own One Ring bonanza that caught the attention of prolific Magic collector Post Malone). Throughout the years, Magic has released tons of smaller, collectible sets based on everything from My Little Pony to Bob Ross paintings. In this context, a Marvel-themed set (or sets as the press release implies) feels right at home, a little late even, but teaming up with Marvel seems like it’ll be Magic’s biggest collaboration yet.

We don’t know the extent of this assembly of card-game Avengers yet, but expect all your faves to be there attached to thematically appropriate mechanics. “These tentpole sets will build on the tradition of incorporating beloved fan-favorite characters and elements from world-class brands into Magic: The Gathering,” said Cynthia Williams, president of Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro digital gaming, in the press release. There will almost assuredly be a “No More Mutants” spell that exiles everything with the mutant keyword, and if there is no Commander card for Storm, there will be hell to pay (from me, specifically).
