It took just over 30 years for The Addams Family to recapture the public’s imagination after the 1991 film and its 1993 sequel, Addams Family Values. Wednesday not only reinvigorated Charles Addams’ signature creations, but it also became one of Netflix’s most popular shows, surpassing even Stranger Things. That’s why it was appropriate that The Addams Family‘s Christina Ricci had a part in Wednesday season 1 that allowed her to pass the torch to the current Wednesday, Jenna Ortega, for her breakout role.
Wednesday season 2 is on the way to Netflix, and we’re sharing everything we know about the upcoming season, including when it will return, what to expect, and more.
When will Wednesday season 2 be released?
2025 at the earliest. Netflix has confirmed the nearly three-year gap between seasons 1 and 2, which was pushed back because of the actors and writers strikes of 2023.
When Hollywood paused production for six months, not a single frame of Wednesday season 2 had been filmed. That made getting a new season finished in time for 2024 an impossible task.
When will Wednesday season 2 be filmed?
Very soon! The current plans call for Wednesday season 2 to begin production in late April 2024. In a change from the first season, production is shifting from Romania to Ireland. However, the show will still be set at Nevermore Academy on the outskirts of Jericho, Vermont.
Which cast members will return for Wednesday season 2?
In addition to Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, the following cast members from season 1 are extremely likely to return:
- Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair
- Percy Hynes White as Xavier Thorpe
- Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin
- Jamie McShane as Donovan Galpin
- Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay
- Moosa Mostafa as Eugene Ottinger
The season 1 finale set up Tyler as the potential villain for season 2. Wednesday actually started to have some romantic feelings for Tyler in the first season before she discovered that he was a Hyde, a monster who willingly did the bidding of Marilyn Thornhill (Ricci). While Thornhill (who was secretly Laurel Gates) perished in the first season finale, Tyler survived, and he will likely seek revenge on Wednesday.
Although Wednesday is the only member of the Addams family to have a starring role on the show, the following cast members are also likely to return for season 2 on a recurring basis.
- Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams
- Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams
- Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams
- George Burcea as Lurch
- Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester
- Victor Dorobantu as Thing
Have any new cast members been signed for season 2?
As of February 1, 2024, there have been no new additions to the cast for Wednesday season 2. The strikes are probably responsible for that delay as well.
But with just under three months before season 2 begins filming, any actors or actresses who are joining the series will have to do so soon. Official casting announcements should begin as we get closer to season 2’s start date.
What is Jenna Ortega’s new role behind the scenes?
In a nod to both her rising star in the industry and her part in making Wednesday such a massive success, Jenna Ortega is now a producer on the series moving forward. That gives Ortega more of a say in the creative process as Wednesday’s story continues.
Ortega has previously mentioned that she rewrote some of the dialogue in season 1 when she felt that it was out of character for Wednesday. Presumably she will remain protective of her character in the new season as well.
What’s going to happen in Wednesday season 2?
Netflix has yet to release any story details about Wednesday season 2. But in a video released last year, Ortega, Myers, Sunday, and Doohan spoke about some fan theories about what the upcoming season may include. They also confirmed that Wednesday season 2 will introduce a new member of the Addams family. But they didn’t say who the new family member will be.

What has Jenna Ortega said about Wednesday season 2?
“I’ve received some scripts now for the second season, and we’re definitely leaning into a little bit more horror,” said Ortega “It’s really, really exciting because all throughout the show [Wednesday] never really changes and that’s what’s wonderful about her.”
“There’s some really good one-liners and I think everything is bigger,” added Ortega. “It’s a lot more action-packed. I think each episode will probably feel a little bit more like a movie, which is nice.”
During an earlier interview with Variety, Ortega said, “We’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great.” Ortega also reiterated that the new season will have more horror elements but added that the show won’t get too dark.
“Because it is so lighthearted, and a show like this with vampires and werewolves and superpowers, you don’t want to take yourself too seriously,” said Ortega.
Is there a Wednesday spinoff on the way?
Officially, not yet. Unofficially, Netflix has plans to expand the Wednesday universe. Bloomberg reported in late 2023 that a potential Wednesday spinoff centered around Fred Armisen’s Uncle Fester is under discussion. However, Netflix has not given the show the greenlight, nor has Armisen been confirmed to headline the possible series. Armisen would presumably need to sign alongside a creative team before Netflix will move forward with this spinoff.
Aside from Uncle Fester, the two most likely members of the Addams family who could potentially carry their own show would be Gomez and Morticia. The husband-and-wife duo is a package deal and is rarely seen without each other. If Netflix decides to pursue a Gomez and Morticia spinoff, Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones would presumably be asked to return.
Will Tim Burton direct episodes of Wednesday season 2?
Although Tim Burton directed the first four episodes of Wednesday, it’s currently unknown if he will helm any part of the upcoming second season. Burton remains attached to the show as an executive producer, and he cast Ortega as the female lead opposite Michael Keaton in the long-awaited Beetlejuice 2. That may help convince Burton to step behind the camera again for Wednesday, but for now, that remains unconfirmed.
