You can be a mother raising two children and running a billion-dollar company, but can you really start a new business in your 50s? Amy shares three tips that can help Gen X and Boomers start a business:

Find the Need

This goes for anyone starting a business. We all know that any new business thrives when it fills a gap. Finding that gap is crucial, but for those of us in the over-50 age range, it’s even more important!

The first step is to find a need in the area you want to work in. You’ll have to do some polling and online research to discover exactly what the need is and who you’ll serve by filling it. “We don’t want to spend years tweaking our ideas to make sure they will work. This upfront time will be well worth it because you will move more quickly in creating your offers and they will be well-received,” shares Amy.

Create Visibility

In a saturated digital world, where there is more content than consumers, creating a visibility for your products or service is key. “When you have a product or service to sell, you need to shout it from the rooftops. You should start sharing it with everyone you know personally and on the social media platforms that your target audience hangs out on.”

Building a personalized email list sparks connection. Even if it only has a few names on it, sending direct emails to your consumers’ inboxes makes a difference. Start growing it and getting your message out.

Networking is Amy’s secret sauce. “Look for local networking groups you can visit or join. Get out there and talk to people. Women always ask me how I fill my events or how I find travelers for my trips and retreats. I tell them, it’s all social media, my email list and networking.”

Work to the Best of your Ability

As an entrepreneur, you are probably used to doing everything yourself. That may work in your younger years, but as time ticks on, your best bet is to focus on tasks that align with your strengths and maximize your talent.

“There are certainly some tasks for my business that are “Amy only” ones, and I do those. But usually there are components of the projects I work on that can be delegated. Make sure you’re working at your highest level whenever possible!” adds Amy.

If there are things on your To-Do list that someone else can do as well or better than you can, delegate them. Even if you have to pay the cost, it will be worth it in the end because you will be utilizing your best skills and traits to both create and grow your business.

Amy’s tips highlight the timeless nature of the entrepreneurial spirit. The wisdom that comes with age is matchless. Innovation knows no age so let’s consider is limitless potential.
