With the beginning of May heralding the coming of Memorial Day, it’s about time to consider what you’re going to be buying this year and what you’re going to leave for the next. That’s especially true for appliances since Memorial Day often has the best deals of the year when it comes to those big-ticket items. So, if you’ve wanted to get a new fridge, washer, or even an air fryer, this is probably the best time of the year to grab a deal.

When do the Memorial Day appliance sales start?

Memorial Day is a federal U.S. holiday that lands on the last Monday of May and is meant to honor soldiers who have died in the line of duty. This year, Memorial Day lands on May 30th and is preceded by a long weekend.

While the start of the sales tends to vary year on year, sales can start relatively early, and there’s no set date on when sales will start, although we should see deals show up in the next couple of weeks. That’s especially the case since it’s pretty popular with retailers to have sales on the long weekend preceding Memorial Day, so we should at least start seeing deals from Friday, May 27, and very likely even earlier. If you’re not familiar with Memorial Day, it tends to be a popular period for sales, especially for things like appliances, and you tend to find some of the best deals of the year during that event.

Of course, if you’re looking for some deals right now and can’t wait, we have an appliances page where you can find reviews and deals, such as the best washer dryer combo machines and the best food processors, and the best refrigerators. While we know that sometimes emergencies happen and you can’t wait for a deal, if you do have the time, waiting for a Memorial Day appliance deal will save you a lot of money in the long run.

Where are the Best Memorial Day appliance deals?

When it comes to appliances, the best sales tend to come from the big brick-and-mortar stores, which in this case will be both Best Buy and Walmart.

Both of these stores tend to hold a lot of deals throughout the year, such as Best Buy’s TV deals. In fact, we’ve already seen Memorial Day iPad Deals start to sneak up from both, so it’s beyond certain that we’ll start seeing appliance deals from both Best Buy and Walmart.

While Best Buy and Walmart are great places to start, Wayfair is also likely to have some great online sales, even though they just wrapped up Way Day 2022. In fact, considering that appliances are one of their biggest sections, you’re likely to find exactly what you need at Wayfair, especially if you don’t find it at Best Buy or Walmart. If anything, it’s a great idea to double-check anything you find in the brick-and-mortar stores with Wayfair’s offerings since you might find something that’s either cheaper or better for the same price.

While not as widely known, there are a couple of other big appliance places that you’re likely to find deals in; Lowe’s and ABT. Both of these deal heavily with appliances, home renovations, and upgrades, so the chances that you find some great appliance deals on Memorial Day are high. We’d suggest keeping an eye on these, especially since they may have some better deals to attract sales and compete with the bigger stores. Kohl’s is another place to look, although that’s mostly for small appliances, so don’t expect to find anything from the larger appliances such as fridge or washers, although if you’re looking for a blender, an air fryer, or even a hairdryer, you might find some good deals.

Another great place to look is Samsung. It’s one of the biggest appliance companies out there, and if you’re trying to build up your smart home, then their appliances are a great option since Samsung is already trying to push its ecosystem and smart devices. That’s not to say that their appliances aren’t excellent, even if you aren’t interested in the smart home side of things, but they generally have great deals, good financing, and are a well-known brand.

Finally, Amazon is almost always having great sales, although their lack of specialization in appliances might mean that you won’t get as great a deal as you might find in the previously mentioned places. Still, Amazon often has excellent deals, so if you’re looking for a specific item, it’s absolutely worth keeping an eye on them.

Should you buy an appliance on Memorial Day 2022?

If you can afford to, absolutely! Some of the most significant sales on appliances happen during Memorial Day, and even if you waited for, say, something like Prime Day, you likely won’t find as many good deals as you would in the Memorial Day sales.

That being said, don’t just take any opportunity that shows up in front of you. You’ll often see an excellent deal that might be a bit too expensive or out of your budget, and you’ll be tempted to go for it. That can be a problem down the line, especially if you’re going to be tight on cash for a few months, so it’s important to know that what you are buying is serving your needs and not an unnecessary luxury. For example, do you really need a fridge with an ice dispenser? Maybe not, but if you don’t know your minimum requirements, you won’t be able to make smart decisions.

Thankfully, many places that sell appliances do have instalment plans, so that’s always an option if you need some different forms of financing. The best advice is to go for things that will give you the biggest bang for your buck and to keep in mind that the more expensive things get, the lower the return they will have. It’s a matter of diminishing returns after a certain point when it comes to appliances, especially the larger ones like fridges.
