Skytrack combines aspects of rail and aviation to create a carbon-free system capable of transporting 100 passengers at speeds competing with commercial aircraft. However, realizing this innovative vision requires overcoming complex technical barriers. These challenges include ensuring automated control systems are reliable, making the system resilient to weather variations, and developing fail-safe backup systems for unforeseen events. Nam Kim believes that if key aspects such as precise landing, seamless connection between planes and trains, and efficient energy transfer can be successfully developed, Skytrack could emerge as a leading global technology.
Indeed, the concept cleverly leverages existing technologies like solar power and electric propulsion in new ways. While experts see promise, some remain skeptical about real-world feasibility.
Nonetheless, Kim is optimistic that the US can lead in this arena. “If we can successfully develop [key systems], this will be a leading technology, and the US can export this system globally,” he stated.
