Cognixion, an AI-powered augmented reality startup based in Santa Barbara, has closed a $12 million seed funding round to bring assisted reality to millions.
The funding round was led by Prime Movers Lab, with participation from Northwell Health, Amazon Alexa Fund, and Volta Circle. The capital will allow Cognixion to develop new adaptive interfaces as well as new machine learning algorithms and AI-powered language systems. Andreas Forsland, Cognixion Founder and CEO, referred to the round by stating:
“We believe that technology should be inclusive and universally accessible to every individual, and everyone deserves a solution that can adapt to their needs – and that it’s possible to build ONE solution that can be personalized for communication, information access, interacting with smart devices, and everything else life has to offer. Prime Movers Lab has the same focus around making augmentative human capabilities a reality. Unlike most VCs, Prime Movers Lab is an extension of our team. In addition to the funding that they are providing, they are already helping us with hiring, marketing, government relations and building a pipeline of prospective customers.”
Cognixion has specialized in the development of non-invasive wireless brain-computer interfaces that detect its user’s brainwaves to control the AR application. The device then allows its users to make use of its speech functions and integrated AI assistance, allowing them to interact with home automation systems and other people. Amy Kruse, Prime Movers Lab General Partner, said about the technology:
“We believe that technology should be inclusive and universally accessible to every individual, and everyone deserves a solution that can adapt to their needs – and that it’s possible to build ONE solution that can be personalized for communication, information access, interacting with smart devices, and everything else life has to offer. Prime Movers Lab has the same focus around making augmentative human capabilities a reality. Unlike most VCs, Prime Movers Lab is an extension of our team. In addition to the funding that they are providing, they are already helping us with hiring, marketing, government relations and building a pipeline of prospective customers.”
By enriching human communication and connection for those with speech or motor disabilities, Cognixion has the potential to change the lives of millions of people for the better. The device also has the potential to be applied in multiple other areas such as gaming, apps, and the metaverse, equalizing the field for those who historically have faced challenges to access such services.
