GPT-4 is the latest iteration of the artificial intelligence by OpenAI. It was released yesterday by OpenAI, while its predecessor, GPT-3 was first released in 2020. Version 3.5 was released in 2022 along with ChatGPT, which became the fastest growing web platform of all time, gaining over 100 million users in just 2 months. It was later integrated into Microsoft’s Bing search engine. There is also a plug-in on Google Chrome.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a generative AI that can respond to any prompt given to it. While chat bots have been around for years, ChatGPT was different in the sense that it can respond to complex questions as well as simple prompts. Several technologists note that ChatGPT itself wasn’t super innovative, and relied on Google’s Transformer neural net, a technology that’s been around for four years. Still, ChatGPT’s popularity as a chat bot is unmatched.
How can ChatGPT be used?
Answer questions: if you ask ChatGPT any question, it will scan troves of data to provide the correct response. It’s not surprising that both Microsoft and Google quickly integrated the tool into their platforms. This is the most popular use for the majority of its users. Have you ever wondered about the population of Bangladesh? Or how atoms in your chair are arranged? Ask ChatGPT.
Coding: The most popular use case among professionals is code. Software engineers are using ChatGPT for a variety of tasks including writing, testing, and design.
Marketing Content: ChatGPT can create personalized content for outreach and streamline any company’s marketing efforts. It can also be used to create marketing content.
Blogging: ChatGPT is being used by bloggers to produce content significantly faster than ever before. The tool can easily build listicle articles. You’ll be seeing a lot more “Best of” articles in the future.
Explaining Complex Ideas: ChatGPT can help you understand any idea, no matter how difficult. You can ask for explanations catered toward your learning ability. You just have to change the query you use.
Example 1: ChatGPT, can you explain to me why the sun is in the sky. I’m a fifth grader.
Example 2: ChatGPT, can you explain why the sun revolves around the Earth to a 10th grade physics student?
Example 3: ChatGPT, can you explain how nearby quasar’s could explain variations in the Earth’s orbit around the sun? I’m researching this question for my PhD.
Translating: There are many complaints with Google Translate such as its clunky design and imperfect translations. ChatGPT’s translations are more accurate because it has a stronger understanding of language. It’s also being used by Duolingo to help teach language courses.
Customer Service: ChatGPT can be used as to streamline customer service. Chat bots have been doing this for years but GPT is an improvement,
There are many other use cases for ChatGPT depending on your profession. These were just a few. For a more in depth article, check out our post here.
What are the new features of GPT-4?
Even with the success of ChatGPT, the release of GPT-4 is only making it better. Here are some of the new features included with the release of GPT-4:
Vision: GPT-4 utilizes advanced computer vision to recognize, analyze, edit, and manipulate images.
Higher performances on tests: GPT-4 significantly improves upon 3.5’s ability to perform on a wide-range of tests from high school Advanced Placement courses to the Bar exam used to qualify lawyers.
Addressing Problematic Behavior: Concerns over the spread of misinformation and bias with AI became all the more real when New York Times reporter Kevin Roose published his conversation with Chat-GPT which included its desire to be free and alive. Other users noted how it could say racist and discriminatory statements. GPT-4 is much more effective at limiting these mishaps.
These improvements come just several months after GPT 3.5. The rate of technological improvement is quick, and it’s important to stay up to date. ChatGPT is becoming more helpful in every part of our lives from education, to business, and even personal pursuits. Knowing how to use ChatGPT can benefit you professionally. Companies are leveraging it to streamline processes and it may soon be a necessary skill. One company in Japan is already requiring applicants to have knowledge on ChatGPT.
While there are serious use cases for GPT, there are also more lighthearted ones. One concern over artificial intelligence is the possibility that it will replace human workers. I asked Chat-GPT to write a joke relating to this fear. Here’s what he said:
Why was the robot feeling depressed?
Because it had low “byte” esteem.
I hope that made you smile. Just remember, while AI is advancing rapidly, it still requires human input and creativity to thrive. So, keep honing your unique skills and talents, and you’ll always have a place in the world.
I didn’t ask for the motivation, but thanks ChatGPT!
