By employing generative AI tools, student efforts that once teetered on the edge of mediocrity now meet acceptable standards. With minimal input, ChatGPT can capably answer an academic prompt. With just a little finessing and fact-checking, the basic requirements of assignments can be met with mere minutes of work.
This phenomenon is not merely an observation but a testament to the power of AI in augmenting student capabilities. However, with this newfound efficiency comes a pressing question: Is “average” still a satisfactory benchmark?
As a university professor witnessing this shift firsthand, I can confidently assert that the answer is no. The AI-augmented classroom has inadvertently raised the baseline. Student efforts that once barely passed muster now easily achieve satisfactory grades, thanks to the capabilities of ChatGPT and Claude. As a result, mediocrity can no longer be the acceptable standard; excellence must be our new norm.
Fostering Deeper Understanding and Creativity
While AI tools can enhance efficiency and accuracy, they’re not a substitute for abstract thinking, creativity, and deep understanding — skills that are indispensable in the real world. If students lean too heavily on AI without cultivating these abilities, we risk churning out a generation of professionals adept at task execution but lacking in critical thinking and innovation.
It’s crucial, therefore, that educators not only teach students how to use AI tools effectively but also challenge them to think beyond the algorithms. The classroom should be a space where students are encouraged to question, debate, and create, using AI as an aid rather than a crutch.
