Xiaomi demos new CyberOne bipedal robot

Xiaomi unveiled its bipedal robot CyberOne at an event in Beijing earlier this week. CyberOne joins the company’s quadruped, CyberDog, in the Xiomi’s Cyber series. 

CyberOne’s advanced arms and legs, as well as Xiaomi’s self-developed humanoid bipedal control algorithm, support bipedal-motion posture balancing. The robot is programmed with a natural and stable walking posture, and has well-developed coordination and motion capabilities. 

The robot’s advanced vision capabilities are provided by a self-developed Mi-Sense depth vision module and combined with an AI interaction algorithm. This gives CyberOne the ability to perceive 3D space, and recognize individuals, gestures and expressions. 

CyberOne is also equipped with a MiAI environment semantics recognition engine and a MiAI vocal emotion identification engine. These give the robot the ability to identify 85 types of environmental sounds and 45 classifications of human emotions. The robot can tell when someone’s happy, and even attempt to comfort them if they’re sad. 

All of CyberOne’s features are integrated into its processing units that are paired with the robot’s “face”, a curved OLED module that displays real-time interactive information. The robot’s full specs are below.

CyberOne is equipped with a high-efficiency motor that weighs 500g, around 1.1 lbs, with a rated output torque of up to 30Nm for the upper limb joint motor. The robot’s hip joint motor is capable of instantaneous peak torque of up to 300Nm. 

Despite the surprising live demo, Lei said that for now, each CyberOne would cost somewhere in the range of 600,000 to 700,000 yuan (about $89,100 to $104,000), according to reporting from Engadget.

Lei Jun co-founded Xiaomi in 2010 and quickly turned it into one of the top-selling Android smartphone brands, both in China and later globally.

Xiaomi’s quadruped robot, CyberDog, was released in August 2021. CyberDog was designed to meet the requirements of anyone from research engineers to hobbyists who want to develop code and applications for the robot but don’t want to pay for a platform like Boston Dynamics’ Spot robot. The robot was the company’s first foray into quadrupeds.
